Superstar Justin Timberlake announced as Shriners' new poster boy

Please note: This article contains one of the late George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say on Television," as well of a photo showing a nearly bare female breast.

Despite the negative Masonic publicity from the Michael Richards racial flap and the failure of the Scottish Rite's NASCAR publicity, the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, or Shriners, seem as ready to tie themselves to celebrities as the Scottish Rite has.

Today the fez-heads announced that former Mouseketeer and current Las Vegas pretty-boy Justin Timberlake, the man who allegedly popped Britney Spears' cherry back around the turn of the century, has agreed to be the front man for the Shrine's Las Vegas Professional Golfers Association (PGA) event.

The golf tournament has been renamed the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Part of the PGA tour, the event will take place in Vegas Oct. 13-19, 2008. Timberlake will play in the tournament, as well as perform a concert on Oct. 17 at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino for the event.

"We couldn't be happier that Justin Timberlake will be a part of the tournament beginning in 2008," said Ralph W. Semb, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Shriners Hospitals for Children. "Justin's involvement will bring an unprecedented amount of attention and interest to the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will assist us in our work to help young people receive the quality medical treatment they deserve, at no cost. We look forward to the bright future of this event."

Last month The Burning Taper wrote about a story that appeared in The New York Times that discussed a 23-page internal report issued by a committee formed by the joint boards of the Shriners of North America fraternal organization and the Shriners Hospitals for Children, which found that Bro. Ralph Semb, chairman of the Shriners Hospitals Board of Trustees, and Bro. Gene Bracewell, the Imperial Treasurer of the fraternal Shriner organization, violated both organizations' conflict of interest policies as well as their ethics codes and recommended that they be "reprimanded."

Timberlake appeared on stage with his pal Madonna in March, where he took a swipe at his former girlfriend Britney, and Madonna called her fans "motherfuckers."

Timberlake, of course, was the man who exposed Janet Jackson's star-studded breast to a world-wide audience during a Super Bowl a few years ago. Imagine the publicity had he been wearing a red fez.

Yes, I'm sure Timberlake being the new celebrity endorser of the Shriners charity hospitals will do great things "for the children" and enrich the organization (though reports since the 1980s indicate that only two to 25% of the donations the Shrine receives ever makes it to the hospitals).

But even discounting the weird conspiracy tie-ins of Disney and Freemasonry and the destructive personalities of many former Disney kids, something seems out of kilter having Timberlake as a front man of a Masonic-related organization such as the Shriners. While blue lodge Masons attempt to maintain a "squeaky-clean" image of "morality" and hold as heroes legendary "founding fathers," the Shrine seems eager to tie us all in (by inference, at least, since many people think the Shriners and the Masons are the same organization) with ultra-cool sex symbols.

Hardly a good role model for "the children," huh?

Check out the lyrics to this song, and then tell me you would want your daughter to dance with Justin Timberlake.
"(And She Said) Take Me Now" (featuring Janet Jackson)

Uh...
Uh...
Uh...
What you waiting for?
I know you're watching me
Hey boy, come on and take me now

What you waiting for?
I know you're watching me
Hey boy, come on and take me now

Can I talk to you for a minute
You've been looking all night for your shining star
Well baby here I am, so why you waiting?
Step on over, let me show you how bad you are

Just let me take the lead
All you gotta do is let your mind be free
Lets hit the floor and cause a scene
Get real wet if you know what I mean
What you say baby?

(And she said)
Take me now
I'm hungry for your loving
(And she said)
Show me how
You got me working, honey
(And she said)
Right now
I'm hot just like an oven
(And she said)
So take me now
Boy you make me feel like I gotta dance

I gotta dance, gotta dance baby, I gotta dance...

I feel good to you, you try to hide it
And I can tell by the way you push up close to me
Your body temperature, is arising
Something's going down as far as I can see

Just let me take the lead
All you gotta do is let your mind be free
Lets hit the floor and cause a scene
Get real wet if you know what I mean
What you say baby?

(And she said)
Take me now
I'm hungry for your loving
(And she said)
Show me how
You got me working, honey
(And she said)
Right now
I'm hot just like an oven
(And she said)
So take me now
Boy make me feel like I gotta dance

You know
Don't I
Say don't I make you feel like you gotta dance

Once I get to know ya
(No)
I'm gonna show ya
(No)
That there's no better way
(Yeah)
Lets dance the night away
(Yeah)
I wanna control ya
(No)
Just wanna hold ya
(No)
Dance the night away
So what you say baby, what you say
(What you saying to me)

(And she said)
Take me now
(Oh)
I'm hungry for your loving
(Hungry for you)
(And she said)
Show me how
(Oh)
You got me working, honey
(Got me working)
(And she said)
Right now
(Oh)
I'm hot just like an oven
(Hot just like an oven)
(And she said)
So take me now
Boy you make me feel like I gotta dance

(And she said)
Take me now
(Oh)
I'm hungry for your loving
(Hungry for you)
(And she said)
Show me how
(Oh)
You got me working, honey
(Got me working)
(And she said)
Right now
(Oh)
I'm hot just like an oven
(And she said)
So take me now
Boy you make me feel like I gotta dance

Like you gotta dance, like you gotta dance, like you gotta dance, no...
Like you gotta dance, like you gotta dance, like you gotta dance, no...

Here we go now
Oh, oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh

I'm like a hurricane
Just coasting along
You better grab me girl
I hope you take me now

I'm like a hurricane
Just coasting along
You better grab me girl
I hope you take me now

I'm like a hurricane
Just coasting along
You better grab me girl
I hope you take me now

I'm like a hurricane
Just coasting along
You better grab me girl
Ttttttake me now

Take me now
I'm hungry for you loving
Show me how
You got me working, honey
Right now
I'm hot just like an oven
So take me now

Take me now
Take me now

Take me now
I'm hungry for you loving
Show me how
You got me working, honey
Right now
I'm hot just like an oven
So take me now
Boy you make me feel like I gotta dance

  1. I don't care much about the Shriners either way, but the girl in the lyrics obviously has her own sense of sexuality, and I don't have a problem with that. I would hope I could extend that to my own daughter, should I have one.

Gahd, Americans are so Puritan at times.

  2. Maybe Justin can provide legal hookers for the shriners and the golfers, that way, no public official Jester's will have to transport them over state lines, thus violate the MANN Act...
do shriners care about the laws of the land? MANN Act, tax shell games, etc..

    oh well

  3. The girl in the lyrics definitely has her own sense of sexuality — it's Janet Jackson.

And yes, Americans can be puritanical.

But more than that, I think we can all be very hypocritical (myself included).

Since I am the only one (so far) who has commented on the Timberlake-Shriner tie-in, I'll assume by "Americans are so puritanical" you were referring to me.

Hardly. Puritanical is not a word used to describe me.

My point in this article, and others like it, is the disconnect I see between Masonic self-proclaimed "virtues" and the reality that many/most of us are as driven by the same urges, needs and goals as those in the "profane" world. We are the same — but many Masons just like to pretend we're not.

We chase money, power and women, while telling ourselves and each other we're "of a higher caliber" than non-Masons. We do things "for the children." We kow-tow to and parade around our "ladies" at Masonic events. We speak of honor and "morality" as if we have the corner on the market of these virtues.

That's what I write about: the disconnect. En masse, and individually, we're no better than anyone else.

Though I've written many times, for example, about the Jesters from New York who were involved in the transport of a prostitute to Kentucky, it is not because I find sex or prostitution immoral. What I find immoral is 1) these men were public officials who have been involved in the arrest and/or prosecution of prostitutes, yet behind the scenes they do the same things they've locked up others for; and 2) the prostitute in this story was not acting under her own free will, but was an illegal alien being kept as a "sex slave."

Read any of my articles that have "bashed" Freemasons or Freemasonry, and you'll see that my "judgmental" statements have seldom been about the "crime" itself, but have been about the hypocrisy of those who are Masons espousing morality and then failing to act in a moral way, usually in the capacity of their Masonic or public office.

When my articles have called into question the motives or judgments in, say, the NASCAR-Scottish Rite tie-in or the SR trotting out Michael Richards as a 33rd degree poster boy or the Shrine teaming up with Timberlake, my point was simply that I thought these sponsorships/endorsements did not further the purported goals of Masonry, i.e., "making good men better" and teaching us to hold to higher ideals and seek further knowledge of our place in the Universe as directed in the Second Degree.

  4. >>I'll assume by "Americans are so puritanical" you were referring to me.

No, I was being off-hand and judging EVERYONE in a flip remark. I was going to write prudish, but changed it ...

Anyway, I get your point, and I agree that 'narrow-minded' does not describe the Widow's Son. Thank you for the clarification, though.

  5. Once again the Shriners, by association, lower the standards that set Freemasonry apart from other fraternal organizations.
Next they will have Paris Hilton as their spokesperson. As if wearing a ridiculous hat and driving clown cars wasn't enough.

  6. Is it me, or did that song just go on and on...?

Well, besides the usual what does that do fro the blue lodge, I'm kind of surprised by it. It may draw some attention and get get it mentioned don MTV, but is it going to mean much to them?

At least it seemed that they were starting to figure out the NASCAR thing, but not celebrity golf tournaments?

Nothing says making good men better than a game of golf and Justin Timberlake singing "..I wanna touch ya baby...".

    ReplyDelete
  7. The other issue is the complete lack of business sense. How many star-crossed twentysomething females play golf and have a goodly amount of money to contribute? Not many. You're really looking for the over-30, male crowd so why Timberlake? You probably also could have found some actor without skeletons. I do applaud them for not being as insular as some organizations but they need to think more.

    ReplyDelete
  8. definitely need to be more out of the box. Maybe a Bret Favre or a Nicholas Cage...?

    ReplyDelete
  9. They should be chasing Sean Connery... more believable and hits the target bracket... if there is a target bracket.

    Thoughts?

  10. Dean and MT,

Excellent examples. Maybe JT is just using the Shrine to project a more wholesome image.

  11. very good point YW. Makes one wonder for a minute who then is using who?

  12. peter sellers?

    who is a timberlake fan?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Who cares if the Shrine has Justin Timberlake hosting a Golf Tournament? In MN, we have a celebrity golf tournament with Vikings players, most of whom are younger than Timberlake including 2007 Rookie of the Year, Adrian Peterson.

Bill Clinton is an Eagle Scout that was named the Honorary Eagle Scout Signatory. (In fact, he signed my Eagle Scout Cert.) Does that mean that Boy Scouts of America promote adultery? Obviously not.

This is a non-issue. Next story.

    ReplyDelete
  14. proof will be in the pudding, so to say. Its only a non story if there is no net change in either ones PR at the end of the event.

If the deals are already signed though, then I think the outcome remains to be seen.

I'll keen a eye on for MTV news for the announce.

  15. Why not Alice Cooper?

He's a middle-aged white guy who doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't do drugs, and has an idyllic family life. Besides that, he wears clown makeup while performing, his concerts are basically morality plays, and he's an excellent golfer.

Who could be a better celebrity spokesman?

Of course, Alice might not want to be associated with the Shriners, but that's probably another story.

  16. I like Alice... maybe Ozzy woudl do it with him, and James Hetfield.

I might even pay to go to that event...

  17. I have actually done some reading and it appears that Justin Timberlake does play golf; apparently he plays quite well. Here is the website.

  18. MF,

He may be a great golfer. I'm only questioning the marketing decision. Most of his fanbase are not golfers and therefore would not be much of a draw. Although some of his more obsessed fans may take it up just to get a glimpse.

It does project a younger image for the Shrine which is something positive.

  19. Tourist

I would ask what is acceptable ? As Mr Yancy said in the previous post "Once again the Shriners, by association, lower the standards that set Freemasonry apart from other fraternal organizations."

At what point do we stop letting the tail wag the dog, i say we, because the GL will do nothing to rock the apple cart.

It goes in line with my opinion on one day degrees, what useful purpose does it bring in makeing good men better. Not just FEEL better.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree Young Wolf that it is strange but it would appear that any celebrity is better than no celebrity. You could invite Pauly Shore to an event and people would get excited. Celebrity draws crowds, even D-List. Timberlake remains an A-list celeb and will draw many people to the event, especially in Vegas.

To the point about Shrine lowering the standards of the Fraternity, what? Every organization, especially large organizations, have problems which is protected against through accounting. This includes outside accounting through the Press and the Government (IRS). Let's not forget the Nature Conservatory scandal in 2003. The CEO was receiving excessive compensation plus a $1.55 million home loan. I suggest that if you want to learn more, just type in nonprofit and scandal.

    Nick

  21. OK I'm sold on Alice Cooper. Let's get him for a few events.

I really don't mind Justin Timberlake... I just think from a marketing perspective that it is a bit off. But then again I haven't seen the Shrines marketing plan. I am not aware of their detailed objectives for this event. And perhaps Justin is not being compensated. If that is the case then "Congrats Shriners!" on some publicity. If they are paying Justin then my opinion differs considerably.

  22. Dion fortune used to say that the best way of judging the spiritual health of any organisation was not to take its public teachings and statements as proof of its integrity , but to look closely at the type of person its discipline turned out. As she put it...." if I join you , will I behave like you ?" Here is the ancient touchstone we can always apply for it is eternally true. "By their fruits shall ye know them ".

  24. Wow that last comment was refreshing...

Archdeaconmalli if you think we are satan worshipers then let me take a page from Bro. Tom Accousti's book.

You only have half the story! We are actually Satan worshiping aliens that come to earth in the image of humans. Anyone want to add to this? I know I'm forgetting some details...

  25. We are actually Satan worshiping aliens that come to earth in the image of humans.

Oh man, my sides hurt now :-)

I'm sorry, Archdeacon, but we're going to have to send the black helicopters over your house to do a quick scan. You probably won't feel a thing. Nothing to worry about, it's just routine.

Oh, um, just in case, though, try not to spend too much time near a microwave oven for the rest of the weekend, okay?

  26. Why would an alien worship Satan in the first place? I'm just askin..

  27. Wow! Now I'm truly hurt.

Ed King had me convinced that I was Satan, and now your telling me that Satan is actually an alien from another planet!

Do I at least qualify as a lesser demon?

  28. Why would an alien worship Satan in the first place? I'm just askin..

Silly - Satan was cast out of Heaven; i.e., he's an alien himself who was sent to Earth.

  29. Yes Tom...

I'm in firm agreement. If US immigration saw Satan's citizenship papers he would be classified as an alien for sure!

  30. Satan worshiping Masons, aliens, riled up radical religious nuts, men in black.....how much more entertaining can this get?

  32. "Why not Alice Cooper?"

I agree. Did anybody listen to the last album, EYES OF ALICE COOPER? It's excellent! Saw him in Vegas during his LAST TEMPTATION OF ALICE COOPER era. He's got something to say, if I'm not right in sync with all of his political views, or the late Dee Dee Ramone's for that matter. Joey Ramone would have been an excellent choice as well, or the Ramones collectively! ;,)
